Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden Advance to US Open Pre-Quarters

The Indian-Australian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden moved forward to the pre-quarters of the US Open by defeating the Spanish-Argentinian duo of Roberto Carballes Baena and Federico Coria. They won the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Bopanna and Ebden started strong, breaking their opponents’ serve in the first game and again in the fifth game, easily taking the first set. The second set was more competitive, but Bopanna and Ebden managed to break their opponents’ serve in the seventh game and won the match.

The current Australian Open champions will next face the Argentinian pair of Andres Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez in the round of 16.

In another match, Bopanna and his mixed doubles partner Aldila Sutjiadi from Indonesia won their first-round match against the Dutch-German duo of Demi Schuurs and Tim Putz. The match was close, with both sets going to tie-breakers, but Bopanna and Sutjiadi held their nerve to win 7-6, 7-6.

Next, Bopanna and Sutjiadi will face Australia’s John Peers and Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, N Sriram Balaji and his Argentinian partner Guido Andreozzi lost their second-round men’s doubles match to Michael Venus of New Zealand and Neal Skupski of Britain. India’s Yuki Bhambri and French player Albano Olivetti secured a win over the 15th-seeded duo of Austin Krajicek and Jean-Julien Rojer.
