Robinder Sachdev Discusses India’s Concerns Amid Middle East Tensions

Foreign Affairs expert Robinder Sachdev has shared insights on India’s immediate and medium-term concerns following the recent escalation in the Middle East. He emphasized the safety of the Indian diaspora, especially workers in the region, as a primary concern. The potential loss of jobs and businesses could lead to a decline in remittances. Additionally, rising crude oil prices and the closure of the Suez Canal are increasing import and export costs.

In the medium term, Sachdev pointed out possible delays in the India-Middle East-European corridor project, announced during the G20 summit, and complications with the Chabahar Port project. These projects aim to enhance trade routes connecting India with Europe, Russia, and Central Asia.

Sachdev also mentioned the potential involvement of Pakistan, which might collaborate with Israel and the US for strategic purposes in Iran. He highlighted the need for India to remain vigilant regarding its security.

Regarding Israel’s military operations against Hezbollah, Sachdev explained that while Israel relies on air strikes, a ground invasion could be challenging due to Hezbollah’s extensive tunnel networks in South Lebanon. These tunnels, some of which open into Israeli villages, complicate ground operations.
