RJD MP Manoj Jha Calls for Protection of Doctors After Kolkata Incident

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha has called for immediate action from the Central government to ensure the safety of doctors following the tragic rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Jha emphasized the need for strict punishment for those involved in the crime and highlighted the ongoing investigation by the CBI.

Jha stated, “The incident is very unfortunate… Doctors across the nation are protesting. The CBI is investigating, and the culprits should receive strict punishment. I urge the Central government to not delay in protecting the doctors which is one of the demands raised by them.”

Protests have erupted nationwide, with junior doctors and medical students staging demonstrations at Mangalagiri AIIMS Hospital and Delhi’s Lady Hardinge Medical College. West Bengal Congress workers and ABVP members have also protested against the incident and the TMC government in West Bengal.

In response to the incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors of modern medicine from 6 a.m. on August 17 to 6 a.m. on August 18. During this 24-hour strike, OPDs and elective surgeries will be suspended, though emergencies and casualties will still be attended to.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage after a postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. On August 14, a mob of 5,000 to 7,000 people attacked the hospital, targeting protesting doctors and medical students, and attempted to ransack the premises. Security officials had to disperse the crowd, and Kolkata police have since arrested 19 individuals allegedly involved in the mob violence.
