Ricky Ponting Joins Punjab Kings as Head Coach for 2025 IPL Season
Ricky Ponting, the former captain of the Australian cricket team, has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Punjab Kings. Ponting will take charge starting from the 2025 season and beyond.
Why Ponting Chose Punjab Kings
Ponting revealed that he was in discussions with several other IPL teams but was particularly drawn to the challenge presented by Punjab Kings. He noted that the team has had a history of frequent coaching changes and limited success over the years. Ponting sees this as an opportunity to build a strong, winning team.
“Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was ‘Project Punjab’ which attracted me. It is a team that hasn’t had a lot of success over a long period of time, a team that’s changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge,” Ponting said.
Exciting Young Talent
Ponting is also excited about the young talent in the Punjab Kings squad. He hopes to bring back some of the promising players from last season and build a team capable of winning the IPL.
“The other exciting part is that I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings’ that hopefully we can attract back to the team for this season and put together a team that is going to be good enough to win the IPL,” he added.
Previous Coaching Experience
Ponting has a strong coaching background, having led the Delhi Capitals to three consecutive playoff appearances from 2019 to 2021, including their first-ever final in 2020. After his tenure with Delhi Capitals ended in July 2024, he guided Washington Freedom to a title-winning campaign in Major League Cricket (MLC).
“Yeah, I’m very happy to be back in the IPL. It’s been such a big part of my life, it’s been ten or 11 years now that I have been going to the IPL,” Ponting said. “The thing that keeps drawing me back is the level of cricket and the quality of players you get to work with.”
Looking Forward
Ponting is optimistic about his new role with Punjab Kings and is aligned with the team’s management and owners on the path forward. He views this as a significant coaching project and is eager to take on the challenge.
“But now this opportunity’s come up with Kings. I see this as a real coaching challenge. It’s almost like a coaching project for me, and having spoken to the management and the owners, they understand the path I want to head on. And we are aligned really well so far,” he concluded.
