Washington DC [US], September 17: Richard Verma, the United States Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources and former American Ambassador to India, highlighted the significant progress in US-India relations at an event titled ‘The United States & India: Milestones Reached and the Pathway Ahead’ at the Hudson Institute.

Unimaginable Progress

Verma noted that the progress in ties between the two nations was unimaginable a few decades ago. He cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that the two nations have now overcome the hesitations of history.

Policy Changes and Cooperation

Verma attributed the progress to changes in policies in both New Delhi and Washington, emphasizing the importance of leadership and creativity in sectors like energy, security, and trade. He also highlighted the role of millions of people who contributed to this progress by traveling, studying, and working together.

Defence and Indo-Pacific Cooperation

Verma praised the defence cooperation between the two countries, noting that India is the only country designated as a ‘Major Defence Partner of the US.’ He also emphasized the importance of the Quad grouping and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Support for India’s Global Role

Verma affirmed support for India getting a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council, highlighting the call by Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield for India to have a more prominent global leadership role.

Future Challenges and Optimism

While acknowledging the progress made, Verma pointed out that challenges remain and emphasized the need not to take recent gains for granted. He expressed optimism about the future of the US-India partnership, noting the productive nature of his recent visit to India, where he met with top Indian officials to discuss strategic cooperation.
