Rev Jesse Jackson Honored at Democratic National Convention in Chicago
Reverend Jesse Jackson, a well-known American civil rights activist, made a surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago. He received a standing ovation for his lifelong dedication to civil rights and equality.
Jackson, who is 82 years old and battling Parkinson’s disease since 2017, appeared on stage in a wheelchair alongside Reverend Al Sharpton and NAACP President Derrick Johnson. Although he did not speak, he waved to the crowd.
Democratic Party chair Jamie Harrison highlighted Jackson’s 1984 DNC speech in Chicago as a source of inspiration for him and the nation to ‘keep hope alive.’
Jackson joined the civil rights movement as a teenager and worked under Martin Luther King Jr. He was present with King just before his assassination in 1968. Jackson later founded the Chicago-based civil rights group Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) to empower African Americans.
The Democratic National Convention began on August 19 in Chicago, featuring keynote speakers such as First Lady Jill Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Kamala Harris was officially recognized as the Democratic nominee for president after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed her.
