Retired Taiwan Navy Officer Lu Li-shih Praises China’s Military at Zhuhai Air Show

A retired officer from Taiwan’s Navy, Lieutenant Commander Lu Li-shih, has sparked controversy after attending a military air show in Zhuhai, China. During the International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, Lu praised China’s military strength and advancements, which was captured in a video that spread quickly in Taiwan and China.

Lu’s comments, including his admiration for “Chinese national integration and rejuvenation,” have been met with criticism from Taiwanese authorities. Legislator Lin Chu-yin described Lu’s remarks as “disgusting.” Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) urged retired officers to be cautious with their words to protect Taiwan’s reputation. The MND noted that Lu, being a retired lieutenant commander, is not subject to penalties like losing his pension.

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) also expressed regret over Lu’s statements but stated that no punitive measures would be taken against him. MAC Deputy Chief Liang Wen-chieh emphasized Taiwan’s policy against praising China’s military, which is seen as a threat to Taiwan.

Despite the backlash, Lu reiterated his views on CTI television, further criticizing Taiwan’s military capabilities. This incident has sparked debate on the responsibilities of retired military personnel and their influence on Taiwan’s international relations.
