Rescue Efforts Continue in Wayanad After Devastating Landslides
Rescue operations in Wayanad, Kerala, have entered their sixth day following landslides in Chooralmala and Mundakkai. Several people are still feared trapped in the debris.
Rescue Operations
Wayanad District Collector Meghashree stated that over 1,300 forces have been deployed for the rescue operations. Volunteers are also assisting, and precautions are being taken to ensure their safety.
Government Actions
The Kerala Chief Minister’s Office has instituted night patrolling in the affected areas. Action will be taken against those trespassing in the houses or areas of the victims at night without police permission.
Support and Contributions
On Saturday, the Indian Air Force airlifted advanced radars to aid the search operations. The Indian Coast Guard, Army, and Air Force successfully rescued three personnel stranded at Soochipara Waterfalls. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed gratitude to the Tamil Nadu government for contributing Rs 5 crore towards the relief efforts.
Casualties
The death toll from the landslides stands at 308. As of Friday, 215 bodies and 143 body parts have been recovered, including 98 males, 87 females, and 30 children. Post-mortem procedures have been completed on 212 bodies and 140 body parts, and 148 bodies have been identified by relatives.
