Remembering Bhupinder Singh Rawat: Indian Football Legend Passes Away at 85

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is mourning the loss of Bhupinder Singh Rawat, a former Indian football winger who passed away at the age of 85 in Surat, Gujarat, on June 29 after a brief illness. Rawat is survived by his wife, one son, and one daughter.

Rawat’s Football Career

Bhupinder Singh Rawat was a speedy winger during the 1960s and 1970s. He was a member of the Indian team in the 1969 Merdeka tournament held in Malaysia. In domestic football, he played for top teams like Delhi Garrison, Gorkha Brigade, and Mafatlal. He also represented Services and Maharashtra in the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy.

Nicknamed ‘Scooter’

Rawat was affectionately called ‘Scooter’ by his fans due to his speed and ability to cut through the rival defense despite his small stature.

Condolences from AIFF

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey remembered Rawat as a classy winger and prolific scorer who served the game with distinction. Chaubey extended his sincerest condolences to Rawat’s family. AIFF Acting Secretary General M Satyanarayan also recalled Rawat’s skills and the joy he brought to spectators, offering condolences on behalf of the Indian football community.
