Rekha Sharma Leads Meeting on Women’s Safety in Srinagar
The fifth Monitoring Committee meeting of Special Cells for Women within the Police system, supported by the National Commission for Women (NCW) and implemented by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, was held at Banquet Hall, Srinagar.

The meeting was chaired by Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the NCW. Representatives from various departments attended to discuss the progress and challenges of the ‘Violence Free Home – A Woman’s Right’ project, which includes 22 pilot Special Cells for Women in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Rekha Sharma met with the Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, to recommend hiring officers exclusively for crimes against women. Discussions emphasized expanding Special Cells to reach women in remote areas and sensitizing police to handle women’s complaints effectively.
Progress and Future Plans
Balwant Singh, Coordinator, RCI-VAW, TISS, presented the work progress of the Special Cells from January 1 to June 30, 2024. The Special Cells have reached out to 2192 women survivors of violence, providing psycho-social support. Rekha Sharma emphasized increasing the outreach of Special Cells to support more survivors.
