Rekha Sharma Criticizes Mamata Banerjee Over Kolkata Doctor’s Tragic Incident

New Delhi, August 18: Former National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma has voiced strong criticism against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Sharma stated, “It does not seem that this is the work of one person,” while discussing the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Sharma accused Banerjee of attempting to shield those involved in the incident. She said, “There are others involved whom Mamata Banerjee wants to protect. Now that the case is with the CBI, a full investigation will reveal what she was trying to conceal.”

On August 12, Sharma addressed the issue, calling it a very unfortunate and tragic incident. She questioned the safety of women in West Bengal and criticized the functioning of the police. Sharma suggested that the central government should intervene and impose president’s rule in the state.

The incident, which occurred on August 9, has sparked nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community. On Wednesday, the protest ground and the hospital campus at RG Kar were vandalized by a mob, leading to the dispersal of the crowd by security personnel. In response to the ongoing protests, the Kolkata Police have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, around the Medical College and Hospital for seven days starting August 18.
