Ravinder Bhardwaj Elected as Delhi’s Deputy Mayor

Ravinder Bhardwaj, a candidate from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been elected as the new Deputy Mayor of Delhi without any opposition. After his election, Bhardwaj thanked all members of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) for their support across party lines.

Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP convener, congratulated Bhardwaj on his new role and encouraged him to continue the public welfare initiatives in the corporation.

Mahesh Kumar Khichi Elected as Delhi’s Mayor

Mahesh Kumar Khichi, also from AAP, was elected as the new Mayor of Delhi. He emphasized that maintaining the cleanliness of the city will be his top priority. Khichi, representing the Dev Nagar ward in Karol Bagh, won with 133 votes, narrowly defeating BJP’s Kishan Lal from Shakurpur ward, who received 130 votes. Two votes were invalid.

Transition of Leadership

Khichi takes over from Shelly Oberoi, who served as mayor in 2023. The election for the new mayor took place on Thursday afternoon, with Satya Sharma, a BJP councillor and former East Delhi mayor, reappointed as the presiding officer by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.

Security Measures

Security was heightened at the Civic Centre building during the election. The AAP has been in control of the MCD since December 2022, ending the BJP’s 15-year leadership.
