Ravichandran Ashwin Shines in Rainy Kanpur Test Match
The recent Kanpur Test match faced significant challenges due to wet conditions, which wiped out two-and-a-half days of play. This has sparked a debate on whether India should limit their Test venues to a select few.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s Insights
India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin shared his thoughts at the post-match press conference in Kanpur. He highlighted the positives of having numerous Test centres across India, stating that it allows cricketers from all over the country to play Test cricket, which fuels passion and urgency among players.
However, Ashwin also pointed out the drawbacks of playing at venues that lack proper facilities, such as adequate drainage systems. He mentioned that having a few dedicated Test centres, like in Australia and England, could benefit players as they would be more familiar with the conditions.
When asked if India could adopt a similar approach, Ashwin responded that it was beyond his authority to comment on such decisions.
Ashwin’s Stellar Performance
Ashwin’s performance in the series was remarkable. In the Chennai Test, he scored a century in the first inning and took six wickets to help India secure a 280-run victory against Bangladesh. In the second Test in Kanpur, he continued to be a threat to the Bangladesh batters, finishing the series as the joint-leading wicket-taker with 11 wickets alongside Jasprit Bumrah. He also scored 114 runs in the series.
Looking Ahead
After extending their consecutive home victories in Test cricket to 18, the Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, is eager to maintain their momentum in the upcoming three Tests against New Zealand and the highly-anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia later this year.
