Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], September 22: Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin had an outstanding performance at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Ashwin’s efforts helped India secure a 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test match.

Ashwin’s Memorable Performance

Ashwin scored 113 runs in 133 balls, hitting 11 fours and two sixes. Although he did not take any wickets in the first innings, he made a strong comeback in the second innings with figures of 6/88, earning him the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Record-Breaking Achievements

This match marked the fourth time Ashwin has scored a century and taken a five-wicket haul in a Test match. Only England’s Ian Botham has achieved this feat more times, with five instances. Ashwin also secured his 37th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, tying with Australian legend Shane Warne. The only player ahead of him is Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, with 67 five-wicket hauls.

Additionally, Ashwin has now taken 750 international wickets, becoming the second Indian bowler to reach this milestone after Anil Kumble. In 282 international matches, Ashwin has taken 750 wickets at an average of 25.63, with his best figures being 7/59. He has surpassed West Indies’ Courtney Walsh to become the 12th highest wicket-taker in international cricket.

Match Highlights

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to field first. India struggled initially, with the top order collapsing to 34/3. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant formed a crucial partnership, followed by a 199-run stand between Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, helping India reach 376 runs. Bangladesh was bowled out for 149 in their first innings, trailing by 227 runs.

In their second innings, India declared at 287/4, setting Bangladesh a target of 515 runs. Despite a strong start, Bangladesh was bowled out for 228 runs on the final day, with Ashwin and Jadeja taking key wickets.

Ashwin’s all-round performance, including his century and six wickets, earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
