Raoof Hasan and PTI Members Sentenced to 14 Days in Jail for Anti-State Propaganda

An Islamabad court has sentenced Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member Raoof Hasan and nine other party members to 14 days of judicial custody. This decision came after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) presented Hasan in court following the completion of his physical remand.

The FIA and Islamabad police arrested Hasan last week during a raid. The arrest was made due to PTI’s alleged involvement in ‘anti-state digital campaigns,’ which the Interior Ministry claimed spread ‘anti-state propaganda.’

A Joint Investigation Committee (JIC) formed by the government investigated these ‘malicious social media campaigns’ that reportedly caused ‘chaos and disorder.’ The FIA stated that they received a ‘technical report’ indicating that the suspects were in contact with each other.

Hasan’s lawyer argued that since the accused had already been in FIA’s custody for seven days, a medical check-up was necessary as Hasan was not feeling well. The judge approved the medical check-up after Hasan complained of severe chest pain before sending him to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

On July 23, a district and sessions court in Islamabad had approved a two-day physical remand of Raoof Hasan. The FIA prosecutor requested a physical remand to recover gadgets allegedly used for anti-state propaganda. Hasan’s attorney, Latif Khosa, disagreed with the prosecutor’s request for an extended physical remand.
