Ranjeeta Priyadarshini Advocates for Paid Menstrual Leave at UN Summit

Ranjeeta Priyadarshini, a social activist from Odisha, emphasized the need for paid menstrual leaves for women during the ‘Summit of the Future’ event at the 79th UNGA in New York. She has been working hard to raise awareness and challenge societal norms surrounding menstruation.

Priyadarshini explained that paid period leave means all working women should get 1-2 days of leave during their periods, and these leaves should be paid to prevent salary deductions. She shared her gratitude for attending the UN conference for the second time and highlighted the importance of this initiative.

Following her first visit to a UN Conference in Kenya, where she spoke on the issue, the Odisha government implemented the paid period leave initiative on August 15 this year. Priyadarshini also appreciated the Karnataka government’s announcement of six paid period leaves per year but requested an increase to 12 days.

Her advocacy stems from personal experience, as she faced humiliation from her manager when requesting leave due to menstrual cramps, leading to her resignation. Priyadarshini’s efforts have sparked significant conversations around menstrual health and well-being, inspiring changes globally. A Bollywood film on the paid period leave initiative is also expected to be released soon.
