In Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, farmer leader and Bharatiya Kisan Union spokesperson Rakesh Tikait addressed the ongoing protest by Punjab farmers. Tikait questioned the government’s actions against stubble burning, asking for solutions on how to manage stubble without burning it. He highlighted that the protest is currently limited to Punjab farmers.

Protest Details

Farmers in Punjab have announced a road blockade starting October 26 to protest against slow paddy procurement and other issues. Surjeet Singh Phul, Chairman of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Krantikari) Punjab, stated that the protest would occur at four locations, including Sangrur and Moga districts, Phagwara, and Batala.

Government Involvement

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has urged the Central Government to assist with paddy procurement to clear mandis and prepare for wheat production. Mann has discussed the issue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and emphasized the need for a solution to the rice millers’ demands. A recent meeting in Delhi, chaired by Union Food Minister Prahlad Joshi, aimed to address these procurement challenges.
