Rajya Vardhan Reddy Discusses Ganesh Idol Immersion in Hyderabad

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], September 12: Rajya Vardhan Reddy, General Secretary of Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samiti, announced that Lord Ganesh idols made from plaster of Paris (PoP) can be immersed in water. He mentioned that the High Court had given guidelines in 2021 for separate arrangements for the immersion of PoP and mud idols, and it is up to the government to implement these steps.

This statement follows the Telangana High Court’s dismissal of a petition seeking to revive a 2014 contempt case regarding the immersion of PoP idols in Hussainsagar. The court suggested filing a new Public Interest Litigation (PIL) instead and emphasized that these idols should be immersed in designated baby ponds created by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other civic bodies.

During the court proceedings, a bench comprising Justice T Vinod Kumar and Justice J Anil Kumar declined to consider a contempt petition against ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and D Sridhar Babu. Reddy also participated in a meeting with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and other officials to discuss the immersion process, expressing hope that the government would follow the Supreme Court and High Court guidelines.

The Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samiti held a press meeting to discuss the arrangements for the 45 Samuhik Bhagyanagar Ganesh festivities and Nimmjanam, which take place from September 7 to September 17. Reddy also mentioned another petition regarding PoP idols, noting that the High Court had dismissed a contempt petition related to immersion and that a writ petition by idol manufacturers did not result in a ban on PoP idol production.

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations are organized annually by the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samiti, with around 15 government sectors participating in the festival’s closing ceremony.
