Rajya Sabha Mourns Lives Lost in Hathras Stampede
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his condolences for the lives lost in a stampede at a religious event in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. The Upper House of Parliament observed a moment of silence to honor the victims.

Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge called for new legislation to prevent similar incidents in the future. Dhankhar assured that all necessary steps are being taken to provide medical aid to the injured and that a committee has been set up to investigate the matter.
Investigation and Legal Action
An FIR has been filed against the event organizers, including Devprakash Madhukar, known as ‘Mukhya Sewadar,’ and others. The case is registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The event, organized by Suraj Pal, also known as Narayan Hari or ‘Bhole Baba,’ saw a turnout of 2.5 lakh people, far exceeding the permitted 80,000.
Government Response
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has promised a thorough investigation to determine whether the incident was an accident or a conspiracy. He also visited the injured at Hathras government hospital. Rajya Sabha MP Mahesh Jethmalani and Congress leader Pramod Tiwari also expressed their condolences and called for better arrangements and compensation for the victims’ families.
