Rajya Sabha Elections Announced for September 3
The Election Commission has announced that elections for 12 vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha will be held on September 3. The last date for making notifications is August 21, and the scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 22. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is August 26 for Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tripura, and August 27 for Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Odisha.
The polling will be held on September 3 from 9 am to 4 pm, with the counting of votes starting at 5 pm on the same day. The vacant seats include two in Assam, two in Bihar, one in Haryana, one in Madhya Pradesh, two in Maharashtra, one in Rajasthan, one in Tripura, one in Telangana, and one in Odisha.
Mamata Mohanta Joins BJP
Mamata Mohanta, a member of the Kudumi tribal community from Mayurbhanj, resigned from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Rajya Sabha on July 31, 2024. In her resignation letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman, she stated, “I do hereby tender my resignation from the membership of Rajya Sabha, today, i.e., July 31, 2024. I have taken this decision consciously.”
After joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mohanta said, “My only aim is the service and welfare of the public. It can be fulfilled only by joining the BJP.” In her resignation letter to BJD leader Naveen Patnaik, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Mayurbhanj and Odisha but felt that her services were no longer required in the BJD.
