Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar Leaves House Amid Protests Over Vinesh Phogat’s Disqualification

New Delhi, August 8: Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar temporarily left the House on Thursday, expressing disappointment over the lack of support and disrespect from opposition members. The opposition walked out after their demand to discuss wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 was not addressed.

Dhankar expressed his anguish, stating, “For some time…unable to sit, (leaving) with heavy heart.” He emphasized that he was not “running away” from his oath and criticized the attempt to challenge the dignity of the House. He added, “I did not get the support I should have…”

Referring to Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification, Dhankar said the entire country is in pain and that politicizing the issue shows disrespect to athletes. He mentioned that the Haryana government has extended support and announced awards for medal winners.

Leader of the House JP Nadda condemned the opposition’s behavior, stating that it was an attack on democracy. He said, “The behavior of Congress, TMC towards the Chair is condemnable, there is a need for introspection. The way the Chairman has been hurt…I condemn it.”

INDIA Bloc MPs also staged a protest at Parliament seeking justice for Vinesh Phogat. Vinesh was disqualified from the 50 kg women’s wrestling event after tipping the scales above the 50 kg mark. She had entered the Gold Medal bout after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals.
