Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar Talks About Protecting Democracy and the Constitution
Vice President and Rajya Sabha Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized the importance of Parliament in preserving the Constitution and democracy. Speaking at an orientation for new Rajya Sabha members, he highlighted the role of MPs as guardians of democracy and expressed concern over disruptions in the House.
Dhankhar stated, “Whatever happens inside the Parliament, no one can interfere in it except the Chair, neither the executive nor any other institution. Parliament is supreme for its procedure and for its proceedings.” He stressed that the main roles of Parliament are to create and protect the Constitution and democracy.
He also expressed concern over the current conduct of some members, saying, “There is pain when the members keep looking for an opportunity to cause disruption. Political parties decide before the House begins that they will disrupt it today. Probe your mind; is this right?”
Dhankhar recalled the Emergency as the “darkest period of Indian democracy,” where fundamental rights were crushed, and people were jailed. He urged members to maintain the dignity of Parliament and work towards the welfare of the people.
