Rajnath Singh to Inaugurate New Maritime Rescue Centre in Chennai
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to inaugurate a newly constructed Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) building in Chennai on Sunday. He will also open two additional key facilities: the regional Marine Pollution Response Centre (RMPRC) in Chennai and the Coast Guard Air Enclave (CGAE) in Puducherry.
The event will be attended by dignitaries from Union and State organizations, marking a significant step towards enhancing maritime safety and regional coordination. The new MRCC in Chennai will improve the coordination and effectiveness of maritime rescue operations for mariners and fishermen in distress at sea.
The ICG Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre (RMPRC) at Chennai Port will play a crucial role in managing marine pollution incidents, particularly oil and chemical spills. The Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry will enhance maritime security along the Puducherry and South Tamil Nadu coast with Chetak and Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Squadrons, improving aerial surveillance and response capabilities.
These new facilities will ensure robust maritime security and efficient emergency responses, reinforcing India’s commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection. The Indian Coast Guard is responsible for coordinating Search and Rescue (SAR) missions in the Indian Maritime Search and Rescue Region (ISRR), with MRCCs located in Mumbai, Chennai, and Port Blair, and 36 Maritime Rescue Sub Centres (MRSCs) operating under these MRCCs.
