Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with senior leaders of US defence companies in Washington, DC. He discussed new opportunities for co-development and co-production in India’s defence sector.

Industry Roundtable

At an industry roundtable organized by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), Singh invited US defence companies to collaborate with Indian partners. This effort aims to accelerate India’s Make in India program and achieve self-reliance in defence.

Singh emphasized the importance of ‘Partnership’ and ‘Joint Efforts’ in India’s defence industry collaborations. He noted that these elements set India apart from other nations.

Government Reforms

The Ministry of Defence highlighted that India’s progressive reforms have encouraged many foreign manufacturers, including those from the US, to set up manufacturing units in India. These reforms have led to joint ventures and made India an alternate export base.

A significant milestone in India-US relations is the planned co-production of GE 414 aero-engines in India.

Event Attendees

Senior leaders from prominent US defence and technology companies such as Boeing, GE, General Atomics, General Dynamics Land Systems, L3 Harris, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Technologies, Rolls Royce, and ThayerMahan attended the event. Discussions with US Secretary of Defence

During his visit, Singh held discussions with US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin. They talked about bilateral defence cooperation, industrial collaboration, and regional security. They also appreciated the progress in operationalizing the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness initiative and India’s participation in the Combined Maritime Forces.

Both leaders commended the efforts of the India-US Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) for establishing a Defence Innovation bridge between the two countries. The upcoming INDUS X Silicon Valley Summit in September 2024 will announce several key initiatives.
