Rajnath Singh Highlights Border Village Development in Delhi Conclave

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh discussed the central government’s efforts to develop border villages at the Border Area Development Conclave in Delhi. He emphasized the Vibrant Village programme aimed at transforming villages in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh into ‘Model Villages’.

Singh highlighted the construction of over 8,500 kms of roads and 400 bridges, including the Atal Tunnel, Sela Tunnel, and Shiku-La Tunnel. He also mentioned the 220-kilo-volt Srinagar-Leh Electricity Line connecting Ladakh to the National Electricity Grid and the strengthening of transmission infrastructure in north-eastern states.

High-speed internet has been provided to over 1,500 villages through the Bharat-Net broadband project, with a focus on Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. Singh noted that more than 7,000 border villages have been connected with internet in the last four years.

He stressed the importance of infrastructure development for military deployments and connectivity for people in border areas. Singh also highlighted the tourism potential in these regions, noting a 30% increase in tourist footfall in Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh from 2020 to 2023, and significant growth in Kashmir. This has led to job creation and economic improvement, with efforts to make Jammu and Kashmir a tourist hotspot.
