Rajnath Singh and Lloyd Austin Celebrate New Defence Agreements Between India and the US
Washington DC [US], August 24: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed their happiness over the conclusion of the Security of Supplies Arrangement (SOSA). This agreement encourages the defence industries of both countries to work together and strengthens the supply chain.
Rajnath Singh met with Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon in Washington DC on Friday. They discussed various topics including bilateral defence cooperation, industrial collaboration, regional security, and other international issues.
Strengthening India-US Relations
Rajnath Singh highlighted the strong partnership between India and the US, mentioning that their leaders share an excellent rapport. He noted the regular high-level interactions, including PM Modi’s state visit to the US in June and President Biden’s visit to India for the G20 summit in September 2023.
Singh also spoke about the co-development and co-production opportunities in India as part of the India-US Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap adopted last year.
Key Agreements and Initiatives
Both ministers welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement regarding the Deployment of Liaison Officers. India will deploy its first Liaison Officer to the Headquarters Special Operations Command in Florida, US.
They also appreciated the progress in operationalising the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness, a Quad initiative, and India’s efforts to enhance Maritime Domain Awareness in the Indian Ocean Region. India will deploy Indian Navy personnel in the Combined Maritime Forces’ Combined Task Force 150 headquarters in 2025.
The leaders commended the India-US Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) for establishing a Defence Innovation bridge between the two countries. The upcoming INDUS X Silicon Valley Summit in September 2024 will announce several key initiatives.
Looking Forward
The meeting at the Pentagon was preceded by a wreath-laying ceremony by Rajnath Singh at the Arlington National Cemetery. Both leaders look forward to meeting again at the next India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue.
Rajnath Singh shared his thoughts on X, saying, “Excellent meeting with my dear friend @SecDef Lloyd Austin. We reviewed the existing defence cooperation activities and discussed ways to deepen it further. The signing of Security of Supply Arrangements and the agreement for positioning of Indian officers at key US commands are pathbreaking developments.”
Rajnath Singh is on an official visit to the US from August 23 to 26.
