Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin on Friday to discuss a range of topics including bilateral defence cooperation, industrial collaboration, and regional security. The meeting took place during Rajnath Singh’s four-day visit to the US.

Key Discussions

The two leaders talked about various co-development and co-production opportunities in India, as outlined in the India-US Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap adopted last year. They also appreciated the progress made in the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness initiative, a Quad project aimed at enhancing maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.

Future Plans

Both leaders welcomed India’s ongoing participation in the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) and noted that Indian Navy personnel will be deployed to CMF’s Combined Task Force 150 headquarters in 2025. They also commended the efforts of the India-US Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) for fostering innovation and collaboration between the two countries.

Upcoming Events

The upcoming INDUS X Silicon Valley Summit in September 2024 will feature several key initiatives. Both ministers expressed satisfaction over the conclusion of the Security of Supplies Arrangement (SOSA) between India and the US, which aims to enhance supply chain resilience. They also welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement for the deployment of Liaison Officers, with India set to deploy its first Liaison Officer to the Headquarters Special Operations Command in Florida, US.

Rajnath Singh took to social media platform X to describe the meeting as ‘excellent’ and mentioned that they reviewed existing defence cooperation activities and discussed ways to deepen them further. He highlighted the signing of the Security of Supply Arrangements and the agreement for positioning Indian officers at key US commands as significant developments.

Additional Activities

The meeting at the Pentagon was preceded by a solemn wreath-laying ceremony by Rajnath Singh at the Arlington National Cemetery. Both leaders looked forward to meeting again at the next India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue.
