New Delhi, India, August 14: Former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has filed a criminal defamation complaint against Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in a Delhi Court. The complaint arises from remarks made by Tharoor during the recent Lok Sabha elections, which Chandrasekhar claims were defamatory and harmful to his reputation.

Chandrasekhar alleges that Tharoor, in an interview with a news channel, accused him of engaging in vote bribery. Chandrasekhar contends that these statements are damaging to his reputation, prompting him to take legal action. The complaint also mentions another interview where Tharoor claimed that various individuals had approached him with similar allegations against Chandrasekhar.

The defamation complaint was filed in Delhi’s Patiala House Court. However, the judge noted that since Tharoor is a Member of Parliament, the court does not have jurisdiction over the matter. The case may need to be transferred to a court with appropriate jurisdiction.

The transfer petition was scheduled to be heard by the Delhi High Court on August 13 but was postponed. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna is set to hear the petition on August 21.

The complaint highlights that Tharoor made what are described as frivolous and baseless allegations through news channels and online platforms. It also states that Chandrasekhar issued a legal notice to Tharoor on April 9, 2024, demanding a retraction and an unconditional public apology. Tharoor did not respond to the notice or retract his statements.
