Rajeev Chandrasekhar Calls for Action After Hema Committee Report on Kerala Film Industry
In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has urged for quick and transparent investigations following the Justice Hema Committee report. The report revealed the misuse of power and harassment faced by women in Kerala’s film industry.
Chandrasekhar emphasized that women have the right to work in safe environments, regardless of their profession. He criticized the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) for failing to create a safe working environment and protect women.
Actor Mohanlal and other executive members have resigned from AMMA. Mohanlal informed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan about the decision. The resignations followed demands from AMMA members for those facing allegations to step down.
More female actors have come forward with complaints after the Hema Committee report was released. The Kerala government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the issues. The SIT has been strengthened with additional women officers, and all related cases will be handed over to them.
Recently, Malayalam film actor Minu Muneer accused several co-stars of harassment. These allegations came after the resignation of director Ranjith and actor Siddique from AMMA. The Hema Committee report, made public earlier this month, contained shocking accounts of harassment and exploitation faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry.
