Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma and PM Modi Remember the Emergency of 1975
On June 25, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma spoke at an event at the Rajasthan International Center, calling the night of June 25, 1975, a ‘thunderbolt’ for the country. He accused the Congress Party of misusing the Constitution and imprisoning people, including banning the press.
Prime Minister Modi also criticized the Congress, stating that the Emergency period is a reminder of how the party trampled over the Constitution. He paid homage to those who resisted the Emergency and highlighted the suppression of democratic principles during that time.
The Emergency, declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from June 25, 1975, to 1977, is considered one of the most controversial periods in India’s history. It involved political arrests, mass forced sterilization, and other repressive measures.
