Rain Spoils South Africa’s Victory Hopes in First Test Against West Indies
South Africa’s captain Temba Bavuma expressed disappointment as rain disrupted the first Test against the West Indies in Trinidad, leading to a draw. The match, held at Queen’s Park Oval, saw play lost to rain on all five days, with a total of 142 overs lost.
Despite the interruptions, South Africa declared at 173/3 on the final day, hoping to force a win. However, the West Indies, led by Alick Athanaze’s impressive 92, managed to hold on. The match ended with the West Indies 97 runs short of victory and South Africa unable to take the final five wickets needed for a win.
The draw was the first in men’s Test cricket in over a year and left South Africa in seventh place and the West Indies in ninth place in the ICC World Test Championship standings. Bavuma praised his team’s efforts but acknowledged the challenges posed by the weather and the pitch.
West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite found positives in his team’s performance, particularly the batting efforts. He emphasized the importance of belief and planning, highlighting Athanaze’s near-century as a key moment.
The second and final Test between South Africa and the West Indies will begin in Guyana on Thursday.
