Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, speaking at a rally in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir, pledged that the opposition will pressurize the central government to restore the region’s statehood. He emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir’s downgrade to a Union Territory was unprecedented and unjust. Gandhi assured that the INDIA bloc would restore statehood if it comes to power.

His rally coincided with the second phase of J-K assembly elections, which saw a 46.12% voter turnout by 3 PM. The Congress party, in alliance with the National Conference, is competing for 32 seats, while the NC is vying for 51 of the 90 Assembly seats. Voting for the second phase began at 7 AM on Wednesday, with over 25 lakh eligible voters participating. The last phase of polls will be held on October 1, and counting of votes will be on October 8.
