Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, visited relief camps in Churachandpur, Manipur, to offer support to people affected by ethnic violence. The residents of these camps shared their problems with him.

A youth staying in the camp expressed happiness over Rahul Gandhi’s visit and hoped that he would highlight their issues. A college student from Chandel district, whose house was burnt down on May 4 last year, has been living in the relief camp with her family. She said, “We want separate administration. We have been suffering here for long. I don’t think there is peace. There is still a crisis.”

Rahul Gandhi arrived at Imphal airport to visit the relief camps and will also meet Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey. He visited the Jiribam Higher Secondary School relief camp and offered support to the victims of violence there. The Congress party stated that this is his third visit to Manipur post-violence, showing his commitment to the people’s cause.

Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi visited Assam to meet flood-affected victims at a relief camp in Fulertal, Lakhipur. Violence erupted in Manipur on May 3 last year following clashes during a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union to protest against the demand for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned in the Rajya Sabha that the central government is making efforts to normalize the situation in Manipur. He stated that more than 11,000 FIRs have been registered and over 500 people have been arrested. The government is talking to all stakeholders to restore peace, and schools, colleges, offices, and other institutions are open in the state.
