Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, visited Hathras to meet the families affected by a tragic stampede that claimed 121 lives during a religious event. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized Gandhi for not visiting the victims of the Kallakurichi illicit liquor tragedy in Tamil Nadu.

BJP’s Criticism

BJP leader CR Kesavan questioned why Gandhi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had not consoled the families of the Kallakurichi victims. Kesavan also accused Gandhi of making false statements about compensation for Agniveer Ajay Singh.

Uttar Pradesh Government’s Response

Uttar Pradesh Minister Baby Rani Maurya stated that Gandhi’s visit was politically motivated. She mentioned that the state government has formed a committee to investigate the incident and that legal action would follow based on the committee’s report.

Opposition’s Defense

Opposition leaders, including CPI General Secretary D Raja and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, defended Gandhi’s visit, calling it a compassionate act. They urged the Uttar Pradesh government to provide adequate compensation to the victims’ families.

Compensation and Investigation

The central and state governments have announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakhs each for the bereaved families. Union Minister Nityanand Rai confirmed that the Central government is cooperating with the Uttar Pradesh government in the investigation.

Rahul Gandhi’s Appeal

During his visit, Gandhi appealed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to provide compensation with an open heart. He emphasized that his visit was not politically motivated but aimed at addressing administrative deficiencies.
