Rahul Gandhi Urges PM Modi to Address Violence in Manipur
On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, expressed his deep concern over the ongoing violence in Manipur. He described the situation as “deeply disturbing” and called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state to help restore peace.
In a post on X, Gandhi highlighted the hope that the Central and State governments would have worked towards reconciliation after more than a year of division and suffering. He urged the PM to take action to heal the region.
Due to the law and order situation, a curfew was re-imposed in Imphal West District from Saturday until further notice. The previous relaxation of the curfew was canceled, with essential services like healthcare being exempt.
The tension in Manipur escalated earlier this week following the alleged abduction of six individuals and the discovery of three bodies. The Ministry of Home Affairs extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 in certain areas to maintain security.
The AFSPA will be in effect in areas under the jurisdiction of specific police stations in five districts of Manipur until March 31, 2025, following a review of the security situation.
