Rahul Gandhi Takes Oath in Lok Sabha with Constitution in Hand

On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi took the oath as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Raebareli in the 18th Lok Sabha, holding a copy of the Constitution. As he left the Parliament, he said ‘Jai Samvidhan’ to reporters.

Rahul Gandhi was among the remaining MPs who took their oaths, following 262 newly elected MPs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who did so on Monday.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi and Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi were present to support Rahul Gandhi. Priyanka expressed her pleasure at seeing several party leaders taking oaths.

Besides Rahul Gandhi, other key leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc, including Akhilesh Yadav, Mahua Moitra, Supriya Sule, and Kanimozhi, also took their oaths on the second day of the 18th Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi won from both Raebareli and Wayanad constituencies in the recent Lok Sabha polls. He defeated the Communist Party of India’s Annie Raja in Wayanad and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Dinesh Pratap Singh in Raebareli. Rahul Gandhi chose to represent Raebareli, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature from Wayanad.

If Priyanka Gandhi wins from Wayanad, three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family will be in Parliament: Sonia Gandhi in Rajya Sabha, and Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, the opposition INDIA bloc nominated 8-time MP K Suresh for the position of Lok Sabha Speaker, while BJP nominated Kota MP Om Birla, who previously served as Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha. This will be the first time elections are held for the Speaker position, as it has traditionally been decided by consensus between the ruling party and the opposition.
