Kochi (Kerala) [India], September 21: Anna Sebastian, a 26-year-old professional from Pune, tragically passed away due to work-related stress. Her mother shared their grief with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, highlighting the harsh work conditions her daughter faced.

Rahul Gandhi spoke to Anna’s parents via a video call arranged by Praveen Chakravarty, Chairman of All India Professionals’ Congress, during his visit to their home in Kochi. Gandhi expressed his condolences and promised to turn this tragedy into a catalyst for change.

On social media, Rahul Gandhi stated, “I spoke with the heartbroken parents of Anna Sebastian, a bright and ambitious young professional whose life was tragically cut short by toxic and unforgiving work conditions.” He praised Anna’s mother for her courage in advocating for safer workplaces.

Anna’s mother described the grueling work hours her daughter endured, often working continuously through weekends without time for personal life. She questioned why such harsh conditions exist in India, comparing it to slavery despite the country’s independence.

Anna’s father also requested Rahul Gandhi to raise this issue in Parliament. Following Gandhi’s instructions, the All India Professionals Congress (AIPC) will launch a helpline to gather information on work stress and toxic work culture from corporate professionals. They aim to draft guidelines for better working conditions.

Union Minister Suresh Gopi assured Anna’s father that he would raise the issue in Parliament. Anna, a chartered accountant from Kerala, worked at EY’s Pune office for four months before her untimely death on July 20. EY expressed deep sadness and committed to improving workplace conditions.
