New Delhi [India], August 20: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, on his birth anniversary. He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling Rajiv Gandhi’s dreams for India, taking his memories with him. Rahul Gandhi visited Veer Bhumi and paid floral tribute to Rajiv Gandhi.

Party RS MP Jairam Ramesh also celebrated Rajiv Gandhi’s contributions to India’s political and technological landscape. Ramesh noted Rajiv Gandhi’s role in the March 1985 Budget, which introduced a new economic policy approach, and his work on the 1991 Lok Sabha elections manifesto, which laid the foundation for significant economic reforms.

Ramesh highlighted Rajiv Gandhi’s statesmanship in peace accords in regions like Assam, Punjab, Mizoram, and Tripura. He praised Rajiv Gandhi’s vision for societal applications of science and technology, including initiatives in drinking water supply, immunization, literacy, oilseeds production, telecom, and dairy development.

Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure saw the establishment of institutions like C-DAC, the National Housing Bank, and the Small Industries Development Bank of India. The New Education Policy of 1986 and the reduction of the voting age to 18 years were also significant achievements. Rajiv Gandhi became India’s youngest Prime Minister at 40 in 1984, following the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi. He was born on August 20, 1944, and was assassinated by an LTTE suicide bomber in 1991.
