New Delhi, July 29: Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, strongly criticized the central government on Monday regarding the compensation given to the families of Agniveers who lost their lives in the line of duty. He stated that the families received insurance, not compensation.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi accused Defence Minister Rajnath Singh of lying about the Rs 1 crore compensation, claiming it was actually insurance money. He also criticized the Modi government for not including pensions for Agniveers in the Union Budget 2024, saying, “There is not a single rupee in the budget for the pension of Agniveers.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence clarified that families of Agniveers who die during active service receive over Rs 1 crore, including Rs 48 lakh of insurance, Rs 44 lakh ex-gratia, a Seva Nidhi package of approximately Rs 11.70 lakh, and salary remuneration for the remaining service period. Additionally, there is insurance cover between Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore for which Agniveers do not pay any premium.

Gandhi also attacked the BJP over the Union Budget, drawing parallels to the Mahabharata and claiming that the country is trapped in a ‘Chakravyuh of lotus,’ referring to the BJP’s symbol. He said that farmers, workers, and youngsters are terrified and accused the government of creating an atmosphere of fear.

He further compared the current situation to the Mahabharata’s ‘Chakravyuh,’ stating that six people control India today: Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Mohan Bhagwat, Ajit Doval, Ambani, and Adani.
