Rahul Gandhi Asks Lok Sabha Speaker to Restore His Speech Remarks
New Delhi, India – On July 2, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, wrote a letter to Speaker Om Birla. He requested the restoration of remarks that were removed from his speech against the central government led by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Gandhi stated that his speech aimed to convey the ground reality in the House. He expressed shock at the removal of a significant portion of his speech, arguing that it did not violate Rule 380 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha.
He emphasized that every member of the House has the freedom of speech and the right to raise people’s concerns, as enshrined in Article 105(1) of the Constitution of India. Gandhi argued that expunging his remarks went against the principles of parliamentary democracy.
Gandhi also pointed out the selective expunction of his speech compared to BJP MP Anurag Thakur’s, whose speech contained allegations but had only one word expunged. He requested that his remarks be restored.
Gandhi’s speech, which accused the BJP and RSS of spreading violence and hatred, drew protests from BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP leaders accused Gandhi of misleading the House and terming the entire Hindu community violent. Gandhi clarified that his remarks were directed at the BJP and RSS, not the entire Hindu community.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to reply to the ‘motion of thanks’ on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha later today.
