The opposition INDIA bloc MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, held a protest in the Parliament complex on Wednesday. They were protesting against the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday.

The protesters, holding placards, chanted slogans like ‘Opposition virodhi kursi bachao Budget murda baad,’ claiming the budget is discriminatory. Key figures in the protest included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party General Secretary KC Venugopal, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and TMC MP Dola Sen.

Speaking to reporters, Congress chief Kharge called the budget deceitful and unjust. He mentioned that they would protest and then decide on participating in the General Discussion of the Budget.

Earlier, the INDIA bloc’s Floor Leaders held a meeting at Kharge’s residence to discuss their opposition strategy. KC Venugopal stated that the budget discriminates against most states, and the INDIA alliance discussed how to oppose it.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari added that the budget favors BJP-ruled states and lacks development initiatives. He emphasized that the budget should represent the whole country, not just the BJP.

Rahul Gandhi criticized the budget on social media, calling it a ‘Kursi Bachao Budget’ with hollow promises. Mallikarjun Kharge also tweeted, accusing the Modi government of presenting a ‘copycat budget’ that fails to address the country’s progress.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh pointed out the absence of funds for the decadal Population Census in the budget speech. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also criticized the budget, calling it politically motivated and anti-people.
