Rahul Gandhi and PM Modi Clash in Lok Sabha Over Hindu Remarks
New Delhi, July 1: The Lok Sabha witnessed a heated debate on Monday over comments made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi about the Hindu community. Home Minister Amit Shah demanded an apology from Gandhi, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized Gandhi’s remarks, calling them a serious accusation against the entire Hindu community.
Rahul Gandhi’s Allegations
During a debate on the motion of thanks for the President’s Address, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP-led government of systematically attacking the idea of India, the Constitution, and those who resist these attacks. He claimed that many leaders, including himself, were personally targeted and some were even jailed. Gandhi described his experience of being interrogated by the Enforcement Directorate for 55 hours.
Controversial Remarks
Gandhi stated that the Congress symbol, Abhayamudra, represents fearlessness and protection in various Indian religions. He criticized those who call themselves Hindu but promote violence and hatred, saying, “Aap Hindu ho hi nahi.”
Reactions from BJP
BJP members strongly objected to Gandhi’s remarks. Home Minister Amit Shah argued that associating violence with any religion is wrong and demanded an apology from Gandhi. Shah emphasized that millions of people proudly identify as Hindu and that Gandhi’s comments were inappropriate.
Prime Minister Modi also responded to Gandhi’s remarks, stating that democracy and the Constitution have taught him to take the Leader of Opposition seriously. Modi took a dig at Gandhi, suggesting that ministers were afraid to greet Gandhi in Modi’s presence.
Additional Criticisms
Gandhi also criticized the BJP, stating that the party does not represent the entire Hindu society. He argued that neither Narendra Modi nor the BJP and RSS encompass the whole Hindu community. Additionally, Gandhi attacked the government over the Agniveer scheme.
