As the Election Commission of India announced the dates for the state assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge are set to meet with party workers in Srinagar. Security has been heightened outside the hotel where the meeting will take place.

Arshid Tantary, a Congress youth leader, expressed excitement about Rahul Gandhi’s visit, noting that around 500 workers are expected to attend the meeting. Asif Beigh, Congress Youth General Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, shared his enthusiasm, stating that Rahul Gandhi aims to build ties with secular forces in the region.

Congress is likely to ally with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) for the upcoming elections. JKNC Vice President Omar Abdullah announced that his party has started preparations and launched a manifesto promising the restoration of Article 370, 35-A, and statehood, among other commitments.

The elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes on October 4. These are the first elections in the region since the abrogation of Article 370. The Election Commission has emphasized the need for impartial and transparent enforcement to ensure fair polling.

Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 90 assembly constituencies, with 87.09 lakh total electors, including first-time voters and senior citizens. The region will witness elections after a gap of ten years, following the fall of the PDP-BJP coalition government in 2018.
