Rahul Gandhi and Congress Leaders Visit Srinagar Ahead of Jammu and Kashmir Elections
Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, have arrived in Srinagar to meet with party workers in preparation for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir elections. Ghulam Ahmad Mir, a Congress leader, stated that the party is open to working with anyone who opposes the ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Mir said, “It is not about approach. Before the Parliament election and now before the Assembly elections, we have said that it is the Congress party that fights with the ideology of BJP. Be it in the country or J&K if anyone no matter how big or small the party is and wants to follow this line, we are ready to work with them. Whoever wants to fight against BJP, Congress party’s platform is available for them.”
Earlier, JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra mentioned that Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chief of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party, will not be joining Congress, calling it a “closed chapter.”
During their visit, Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal will conduct a rally to interact with party workers. Rahul Gandhi has expressed a long-standing wish to meet and understand the aspirations of the party workers in Kashmir.
Security has been heightened outside the hotel where the meeting will take place. Congress youth leader Arshid Tantary noted the excitement among people upon Rahul Gandhi’s arrival. Asif Beigh, Congress Youth General Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, expressed enthusiasm for Rahul Gandhi’s visit, stating that he will spread his ‘Mohabbat ka dukan’ (shop of love) in the region.
Congress is likely to ally with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference for the upcoming elections, which will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1. The results will be announced on October 4. These elections are the first since the abrogation of Article 370, and the Election Commission of India has emphasized the need for impartial and transparent enforcement for fair polling.
Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 90 assembly constituencies, with 87.09 lakh total electors, including 44.46 lakh males, 42.62 lakh females, and 169 transgender individuals. The region will witness elections after a gap of ten years, as the last assembly election was held in 2014.
