Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi to Visit Landslide-Hit Wayanad

New Delhi [India], July 31: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are set to visit Wayanad on August 1. They will meet families affected by a recent landslide that has claimed 158 lives in Meppadi, Wayanad, Kerala. They will also visit relief camps set up in schools and medical institutes.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held a meeting to review rescue operations and will attend a state-level all-party meeting in Wayanad on August 1. Union Minister George Kurian visited the affected areas to assess the situation and met with survivors at relief camps.

A delegation of nine state ministers is currently in Wayanad assessing the relief efforts. Over 1200 rescue workers from the Indian Army, DSC Centre, Territorial Army, NDRF, Indian Navy, and IAF are deployed in the area. Teams from the Army, Air Force, and Navy have joined the NDRF, police, and firefighters in rescue efforts. An Army canine unit is also helping to locate bodies buried under debris.

The Indian Coast Guard is actively engaged in rescue and relief operations with support from the ICG Disaster Relief Team of Kochi and Beypore. Chief Minister Vijayan stated that 45 camps have been set up in Wayanad, rehabilitating over 3000 people.

Based on inputs from the Kerala Government, forest officials, and villagers, a team from the 122 Infantry Battalion (TA) Madras, led by Sub Gijil, Sub Jayesh, and Nb Sub Anilkumar, along with 12 Jawans, rescued 19 civilians stranded in ElaResort and VanaRani resort beyond Mundakai village.
