Qadir Magsi Warns Against New Canals on Indus River in Pakistan

In Hyderabad, Pakistan, Qadir Magsi, the Chairman of the Sindh Taraqqi-Pasand Party, has issued a strong warning about the construction of six new canals over the Indus River. He claims this project could threaten the livelihoods of 60 million people in Sindh, leading to a potential disaster.

Magsi criticized the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), accusing them of making harmful decisions for Sindh, especially during Asif Ali Zardari’s presidency. He stated that Sindh has lost its fair share of water, causing a crisis.

During a large protest at the Hatri bypass, Magsi and his supporters, including men, women, and children, blocked the highway to oppose the canal project. Magsi directly addressed Asif Ali Zardari, warning that the people of Sindh would not forgive him if he continued with harmful decisions.

Magsi also mentioned Sindh’s historical opposition to the Kalabagh Dam, which was halted due to strong resistance. He urged Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to learn from history and avoid repeating past mistakes.

Magsi emphasized Sindh’s right to the Indus River’s water, noting that past agreements have been ignored, leading to a water crisis. He expressed concern that the canal project would have catastrophic effects on Sindh’s agriculture and overall life.

He questioned why the government has not opposed the project at the federal level and pledged to continue protesting until the project is stopped. Upcoming protests are planned in Sukkur on November 20 and Karachi on November 24.

Other speakers at the protest included Hoat Khan Gadhi, Nisar Keerio, Abdul Hameed Memon, Qadir Channa, and Ahmed Noonari.
