PV Sindhu Faces Tough Loss at Paris Olympics, Plans a Break

Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu faced a tough defeat in the women’s singles round of 16 at the Paris Olympics, losing to China’s He Bing Jiao in straight sets 21-19, 21-14. This marks the first time Sindhu has not won an Olympic medal, having previously won silver in Rio 2016 and bronze in Tokyo.

After the loss, Sindhu took to social media to express her feelings, calling it the hardest loss of her career. She mentioned that her journey to the Paris Olympics was marked by injuries and time away from the game. Despite these challenges, she feels blessed to have represented India.

Paris 2024: A Beautiful Journey but a Difficult Loss ❤️ This loss is one of the hardest of my career. It will take time to accept, but as life moves forward, I know I will come to terms with it. The journey to Paris 2024 was a battle, marked by two years of injuries and long periods away from the game. Despite these challenges, standing here and representing my wonderful country at a third Olympics makes me feel truly blessed.

Sindhu also mentioned that she is fortunate to compete at the highest level and inspire a new generation. She plans to take a short break to recover both physically and mentally before continuing her career.

In the match, Sindhu started strong but eventually lost the first set 21-19. In the second set, Jiao’s relentless play didn’t allow Sindhu to make a comeback, resulting in a 21-14 loss.

Other Indian shuttlers also faced setbacks. The world number three-ranked pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost in the quarter-finals. However, Lakshya Sen kept hopes alive by defeating HS Prannoy in the Round of 16 and moving to the final eight, where he will face Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei.
