Putin Invites PM Modi for a Special Meeting in Russia
St Petersburg, Russia – On September 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a bilateral meeting on October 22, during the BRICS Summit in Kazan. Putin referred to PM Modi as a ‘good friend’ while extending the invitation.
Meeting with Ajit Doval
Putin’s invitation came during his meeting with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval at the Constantine Palace in St. Petersburg. The Kremlin released a statement quoting Putin, ‘We will be expecting Mr Modi in Kazan. I also suggest holding a bilateral meeting there on October 22 to review our joint work and outline future prospects.’
Putin praised the ‘special privileged strategic partnership’ between India and Russia, noting its growing strength. He also commended India’s progress under PM Modi’s leadership.
Security Cooperation
Putin emphasized the importance of security cooperation between the two nations, stating, ‘Security issues have always been, and continue to be, among our top priorities.’
The Indian Embassy in Russia shared that Doval and Putin discussed mutual interests during their meeting. Earlier, Doval met with Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, to review bilateral cooperation and discuss important issues.
India-Russia Relations
In July, PM Modi visited Russia and highlighted the importance of India-Russia relations for global stability and peace. He praised the strengthening of ties under Putin’s leadership over the past 2.5 decades.
Meeting with China
On the sidelines of the BRICS NSAs’ meeting, Doval also met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. They discussed maintaining peace and tranquillity in border areas and respecting the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to restore normalcy in bilateral relations. Both sides agreed to work urgently towards complete disengagement in the remaining areas.
BRICS Summit
Russia is holding the BRICS chairmanship for 2024. BRICS is a group of states including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with new members Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia joining in 2023. NSA Doval participated in the 13th BRICS NSA meeting in Johannesburg in July 2023.
