BRICS Summit in Kazan: Expansion Talks and Key Meetings

The 16th BRICS Summit took place in Kazan, Russia, where Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that over 30 countries are interested in joining the BRICS group. During the plenary session, Putin emphasized the importance of balancing expansion with maintaining the group’s effectiveness. He also mentioned that the summit would address regional conflicts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet, marking their first formal interaction in five years. This meeting follows an agreement between India and China to resume regular patrolling along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, shared a photo of the BRICS leaders, including PM Modi, highlighting the unity and inclusivity of the group. Discussions at the summit also focused on establishing a partner country model for BRICS expansion, as noted by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

BRICS, originally formed by Russia, India, and China, expanded to include South Africa in 2010. The latest expansion in 2024 added Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to the group.
