Putin and Modi Discuss BRICS and Ukraine Conflict Ahead of Summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin has echoed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s views on BRICS, emphasizing that the group is non-Western rather than anti-Western. This statement comes as the BRICS summit approaches in October. During a conversation with journalists from BRICS countries, Putin highlighted the group’s unique approach, quoting PM Modi, “BRICS is not an anti-Western group; it’s just a non-Western group.”

Putin further explained that BRICS does not oppose any nation but rather works collaboratively with shared values and goals. He expressed gratitude to PM Modi for consistently addressing the Ukraine conflict, stating, “While talking with PM Modi, each time he raises this matter and expresses his considerations. We are thankful to him for that.” Putin added that Russia is interested in resolving the conflict peacefully, blaming Ukraine for halting negotiations.

This development follows PM Modi’s visit to Kyiv, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and reiterated India’s support for a peaceful resolution. Russia currently holds the BRICS presidency and will host the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan from October 22-24. PM Modi will attend the summit at Putin’s invitation.

BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, was formalized in 2006 and has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE in 2024. The group has held 15 summits so far, with India chairing BRICS in 2021, marking its 15th anniversary.
